PHP Treatment

Individualized care that is built around healing, respect, empowerment, and choice.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a “step down” from inpatient levels of care such as detox or residential (rehab), but more intense than the Continuum intensive outpatient program (IOP). At Continuum, our PHP treatment program is an intense, four-week program that provides structure five days a week for six hours a day at the Continuum Outpatient Center in San Antonio.

PHP Treatment is designed to promote community building, psychosocial skills development, and increase emotional intelligence quotient (EQ). Through the use of process therapy groups, expressive arts, and yoga, PHP provides a safe and shame-free environment for people to build new life skills and maintain a healthier lifestyle in recovery.

How Is PHP Treatment Used in Mental Health Care?

In the mental health care setting, PHP can be used as a bridge to aid people in successfully progressing from inpatient care to outpatient care. Typically, when people are admitted to an inpatient mental health care facility, they recently had a mental health crisis. A mental health crisis is any situation in which a person is at risk of harming themselves or others.
At an inpatient facility, the person gains access to counseling and psychiatry services. The person is also monitored on a 24/7 basis. The top priorities of an inpatient facility prior to discharge (when a person leaves a facility after care) are to provide medical stabilization, create a safety plan, and establish a plan for ongoing care.
A person may need to gain medical stabilization or medical treatment for various conditions such as a very recent suicide attempt, kidney disease that requires regular dialysis, or a severe heart condition. A safety plan is a document each client develops with their mental health therapist. A safety plan may include a list of healthy coping strategies and various emergency and personal phone numbers to use when feeling at risk.
Once a safety plan is created and the person is treated for medical conditions, the person is then discharged to a lower level of care, which may be PHP for continued maintenance.

How Is PHP Used for Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Treatment?

For substance use disorder (SUD), PHP is helpful for those that are able to maintain progress and avoid relapse when outside of the structure and supervision of inpatient care. PHP mimics the frequent counseling and medical services of inpatient care (detox, rehab) but also provides flexibility for the person to return home each night.

Is PHP Treatment Right for My Loved One or Me?

PHP is a good fit for you or your loved one if you would benefit from the additional support of frequent counseling and medical services after inpatient care but are not quite ready for the less frequent counseling that is offered in IOP. To be successful in PHP, you or your loved one will also need to determine if you are able to resist outside temptations, avoid relapse, and maintain treatment progress given you will not be monitored 24/7 like when in detox, rehab, or hospital care.

Admissions Criteria

For admission to PHP, a client must meet the following criteria:
  1. Based on clinical evaluation, the client’s condition requires a structured program with active engagement in treatment each program day.
  2. Safe and effective treatment cannot be provided in a less intensive outpatient setting at this time.
  3. Without participating in a highly structured treatment, the client would likely be unable to maintain recovery.
  4. The client is medically stable (has gained treatment for medical conditions and is now stable).

Resources

The partial hospitalization program will take place at the 6200 UTSA Boulevard STE 102 location. PHP treatment at this location will include individual therapy, group therapy, trauma-informed yoga, and medical services.

During PHP, lunch will be served with a limited menu that offers healthy choices. The lunch menu will be provided daily by Continuum staff. Consultation with a medical provider will need to be established prior to the start of PHP.
